OUR MISSION
As a transformative middle-school experience for high-achieving students, Scranton Prep’s BUILD Higher Achievement Program enriches creative and critical thinking, encourages compassionate and cultured responsibility, and enlivens curious and charismatic faith.
OUR PRACTICE
BUILD is an educational and leadership program that invites middle-school students to lay the foundation for their futures. Through a unique five-week enrichment program guided by full-time faculty from Scranton Prep and other area schools, students experience cura personalis – care for the whole person – through rigorous courses in Mathematics, Reading, and Writing, through leadership and counseling workshops, and through mini-courses in music, art, theater, athletics, nutrition, science, and technology. BUILD provides students a chance to build academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
ACADEMICS
Every morning, students take three courses designed to improve their academic performance in their school years ahead as well as on the High School Placement Test (HSPT).
MATHMATICS
- Develop skills covered in 6th grade and explore topics covered in 7th and 8th grades.
- Explore Algebra and Geometry concepts
- Practice problem solving techniques required for success on standardized tests
CRITICAL THINKING THROUGH READING
- Develop reading comprehension and study skills
- Explore group discussions, vocabulary review, independent reading, and critical analysis of texts
- Practice questions and content encountered on standardized tests
WRITING
- Develop key elements of quality writing
- Explore writing purpose and audience, use of effective vocabulary, sentence structure, and sentence variety
- Practice writing short stories, personal narratives, poetry, and descriptive, persuasive, and informational paragraphs.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
The theme for each week’s work will be centered around a weekly workshop. Area professionals will join us to lead a daily workshop in some of the following fields:
- Studio art
- Music
- Theater
- Athletics
- Science
- Technology
- Health & Nutrition
SERVICE ACTIVITIES
The mission of Scranton Prep – and thus the mission of BUILD – is greatly rooted in a call to serve God and neighbor, especially in our local community. Each Wednesday, BUILD participants will participate in a service project that helps build the Scranton community into a more positive and loving environment. Any necessary waiver and/or permission forms will be distributed the week prior to the service project.
